Dubrovnik is a deed oflove, love made manifest in this ancient place, which was life-supporting from the moment it was created. Dubrovnik stands before us like a stone miracle, a puzzle composed of carefully crafted blocks created as a gift and homage to life, a sample catalogue of beautiful items for durable use by every eager spirit. Here life can be lived to the full, from that first finger of smoke spiralling up into the blue sky, and persisting like the elaboration of an eternal tune, recurring incessantly in the shape of the stone ramparts encircling this city, this box of resonances, this small intelligent nucleus so well adjusted to good living and sound breathing. It is bequeathed from one century to the next in a continuous aleatoric contest with the merciless jaws of time, and placed in the hands of its inheritors like a document, a pawn, an adornment and a burden. It is our task to pass it on unspoilt and untarnished to future generations as crown evidence of our presence on this earth. In the light of its climate Dubrovnik is revealed to us clearly down to the smallest detail. It is indeed a house which has the domed sky for roof and birds instead of roof tiles: it is like a ring thrown into the well of existence, protected by the horizon encircling it and stretching far out to meet infinity.
