NELS  Ern. Thill, Bruxelles

The NELS company was founded by Edouard Nels in 1898. At a time when the majority of illustrated postcards were lithographs, the Nels firm specialised from the start in topographical cards employing the recently invented collotype process, which allowed the industrial reproduction of photographs showing the sites and scenes of everyday life.

The company’s zenith was probably during the period 1901 – 1907, when NELS cards really stood out from the competition. The cards were carefully numbered by series and individual card number.

Following health problems, by 1907 Edouard Nels had entrusted the business to his brother-in-law Ernest THILL, who has been his accountant from the start. The period between 1907 and 1913 is characterised by the use of the familiar round “Nels” logo, the division of the back, and the illustration on the front now occupying the entire space; captions and publisher references appeared on the back.

Ernest Thill acquired the firm in 1913 and by the 1920s would have begun to witness the decline of the golden age of the postcard prior to the modern industrialised era.
