Contemporaries as well as countless later historians have attempted to draw a picture of Attila’s achievements and character. The image of Attila, „the scourge of God”, has never faded through the centuries, but it has always been interpreted by widely divergent political and moral principles.
Attila’s enduring fascination inspired Marianna D. Birnbaum and Franz H. Bäuml, Professors of UCLA, to publish the lectures read at a symposium held by the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, University of California, Los Angeles in 1988. The twelve studies written by internationally acknowledged university lecturers from West and Central Europe and the United States include not only the historical information available on Attila, but also a wide range of the representations of his ever-changing image in art, literature and music.
The scholarly work is accompanied by an abundance of illustrations: archaeological finds, gold and silver works, tapestries and sculptures from all over Europe. A thorough bibliography, chronological tables and maps complete the book.
