The study of old English is rather important because it was during this period that the English language laid down its firm foundations and gave birth to those omening gemules which slowly but surely matured ensuring its bloom and world-wide prestige.
Recently synthetized effective methods in the scientific study of language, though hardly more than embryoes, have convincingly manifested how fruitful the study of English may be if we succeed in erecting two-way roads linking linguistic synchrony including the generative theory, with diachrony.
Historical linguistics, and the study of Old English in particular, have started their Renaissance, which felicitously does not revive the discredited rule of thumb methods of stereotyped traditionalism but in applying modern methods and procedures of investigations raises it to a higher level.
Anglicists of all countries involved in university lecturing and training high rank specialists of English make efforts to give more room to historical studies in their English Departments.
These are the premises of Professor S. Rot’s book Old English. It has grown out of lectures on the History of English he has been giving for almost three decades in the English Departments of the L. Eötvös University, Budapest and other universities of different countries. It is primarily intended as a textbook which meets undergraduate requirements of the theoretical course on Old English and its seminar studies (Old English Reader, Glossary, Practical Exercises with Key). It is hoped, however, that it would serve as a springboard raising countless issues for enquiry, discussion and research of postgraduates and people interested in English studies in general.
