“This is Mr. Hoppe’s fourth revision since 1960. In addition to expanding some of the descriptive notes, he records a number of new editions and new volumes since the last reissue in the Library’s Diamond Jubilee year, 1966. The range of these additions again shows the Library’s universal quality; with new renderings from Aristotle and Plato, F.L. Lucas’s splendid anthology of Greek poetry; the complete poems of Francios Villon, new editions of the poems of Coleridge and Arnold, John Clare’s Selected Poems, and Dylan Thomas’s Collected Poems; new translations of the Nibelungenlied and Hindu Scriptures, and many revisions to important existing works. Modern additions to the library also include volumes by Hardy, Kipling, Shaw, Barrie and Strindberg, and a further collection of stories by Conrad. For students and readers of world literature, the work has proved invaluable as a quick-reference guide to the treasures of Everyman. It signposts this information in one alphabetical sequence by author (giving dates of birth and death, together with first publication of works), titles and subjects (with biographical and bibliographical data and concise but informative annotations). References are also made to two allied series, Everyman’s Reference Library and Children’s Illustrated Classics (CIC’s) and a list of Everyman Paperback editions is included.”
