The scene: a junkie with a suspiciously good chess game is dead in a seedy hotel room. Enter homicide detective Meyer Landsman, broken-hearted and rough round the edges, complete with a murdered sister, an ex-wife for a boss, and a liquor and nicotine diet. This long-time member of the Yiddish Policemen’s Union is already bent under the weight of a tower of unsolved cases, but is set on solving this one – despite a serious frost coming (low n from above, matched flake for flake by the weather in this chilly Jewish homeland. Snow in Israel? Not exactly. This Jewish homeland is Sitka, Alaska, and with their time up on the lease, God’s chosen people are facing an uncertain future. And Landsman?
